HATE TORIES!

So we decided to make our last show of the year a benefit for Plymouth Foodbank and Plymouth Hope International  (including a food/goods collection on the night) in light of the desperate financial/social crises that many people are struggling with. It's at The Junction, Plymouth on 23rd December, with lots of our good pals: Pizzatramp + Soot Sprite + Hellwigs + Fresh Specimen + Tripper. We've called it a LOVE MUSIC HATE TORIES event: because all poverty and inequality is a political decision, and because the Tories have 'kill the poor' written into their DNA. And we'll still be doing a couple Clash covers as it's also 20 years since we lost the great Joe Strummer. £7 tickets HERE and £10 on the door, but we won't turn anyone away through lack of funds. (Pay more if you can afford it!) Cheers!

Listening post... John Francis Flynn. The Mary Wallopers. Lankum. The Clash. Katie Malco. The War On Drugs. Russian Circles. Bon Iver. Goodnight Texas. Propagandhi.

OH CANADA!

Our run of shows with the inimitable Eamon McGrath was a blast. We couldn't think of a nicer fella to share the stage/van with. So much so that we're working out a way of touring his homeland of Canada together. Watch this space!

And we're making good on our promise to play more northern shows. First off, we're playing our good buddies Random Hand's Handfest on 28th January at the Brudenell in Leeds with loads of great bands. Then we're heading to the Yellow Arch in Sheffield on 17th March to play with Shanghai Treason and Headsticks, with a string of dates around it. And if we can get in the studio to record a bunch of songs soon, we may even have a new EP to share by then. Hope springs eternal!

In the meantime, we're rounding off our year with a hometown show at The Junction, Plymouth on 23rd December. It'll be 20 years since Joe Strummer died so we (and hopefully all the other bands) will be playing a couple of choice covers in memory of the great man. To Woody! x

Listening post... Press Club. Orville Peck. Pog. Eamon McGrath. Dick Gaughan. Status/Non-Status. Turnstile. The War On Drugs. The Once Over Twice. Propagandhi. The Clash. Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. Constantines.

THE QUEEN IS DEAD!

LONG LIVE ROCKING!

Hello! Very sorry for the lack of spring/summer updates. There hasn't really been much to report other than a wonderful weekend at 2000 Trees festival in July (our 10th year playing the best fest in the West). Unfortunately, we had to cancel a couple other festival appearances, at Kendal Calling and Outcider. Very sorry if you were hoping to see us. We had personnel issues. Them's the breaks.

But now, we're revving up for a few shows in October! First off, we're playing the Cornish Bank in Falmouth on Sat 8th October with our good friends, The Eyelids, Broken Arrow and Chas Palmer-Williams. Can't wait! And then we head out for a little southern jaunt with brilliant Canadian indie/roots maestro, Eamon McGrath. The dates are:

13th The Hobbit, Southampton (w/Mouser)

14th Nowhere Inn, Plymouth (w/Heavy Heavy Hands)

15th Cowley Club, Brighton (w/Pog)

16th Till The Fest, London (w/Random Hand + many more)

Once that's all done, we really need to sort a string of northern dates. And Europe! It's been way too long since we hit the mainland. And I guess we should think about putting out another record. We have so many old and new songs kicking around in various states of completion, and we still need to release the four songs that never made it onto our last album. Hopefully we can stay together long enough to tie up all these loose ends! Peace x

PADDY WHACK!

Our first ever performance at Plymouth Pavilions was a blast! We played with Mad Dog Mcrea, 3 Daft Monkeys and Flanagan's School Of Irish Dance on St Patrick's Day, and we had no less than eight of the Crazy Arm extended family onstage: including Becky Saxton on harmony vox, Simon Dobson on trumpet, Ben Russell on drums, and Sam Spake on fiddle. And it was our first airing of 'Bella Ciao' – a song that sprung from exploited peasant workers in the rice fields of Italy but has since been transformed into an international song of resistance. Our version leans heavily on Chumbawamba's but with crust punk guitars as well as evocative trumpet. We'll get around to recording it soon, hopefully!

Next stop, the excellent Manchester Punk Festival (15th-17th April) where we'll be back to a punk rock four-piece with Tia on guitar/vox for the second time. Cheers!

Listening post... Plosivs. JOHN. Arcade Fire. Drug Church. Hot Water Music. Petrol Girls. Midlake. The Sadies. Heavy Heavy Hands. Sonic Youth. Chumbawamba.

TOP TIA!

Our debut show with Tia Kalmaru on guitar/vox was a roaring success! Phew! Thanks to the people of Warrington for being so lovely. We missed our mainman, Jon Dailey, but he'll be playing our next couple of hometown shows: at Plymouth Pavilions with Mad Dog Mcrea (17th March) and Get Rad Fest, Junction (30th April).

In between that, we'll be playing Manchester Punk Festival (17th April) with Tia back on guitar/vox and the awesome Sean Howe (from Random Hand) standing in on drums while Matt's away teching for Mongolian roots-rockers The Hu! And on bass, for the whole time, is our erstwhile accomplice extraordinaire, PJ Shepherd. Just so you know!

As well as all this, we're busy confirming festivals and future dates/tours for the rest of the year. So keep your eyes peeled for updates! And we may even release an EP later this year to tie in with a short October tour. Fingers crossed!

NEW YEAR'S EVENTS!

Greetings! January, as always, was a bit of a non-event but we've still been busy practising and restructuring. The biggest development being that our harmony singer, Tia Kalmaru, has been learning all the second guitar parts to play live whenever the increasingly busy Jon Dailey is unable. Her debut show with guitar is on 26th February in Warrington. Our nerves will be a-jinglin' and a-janglin' so be kind! Here's what's coming up:

9th Feb Cavern, Exeter w/The Skints

26th Feb FC2, Warrington w/Roughneck Riot

17th March Pavilions, Plymouth w/Mad Dog Mcrea

17th April Manchester Punk Festival

30th April Junction, Plymouth Get Rad Fest

The Plymouth Pavilions show was supposed to be more of an acoustic set but we've been given the go-ahead to rock it up.  So that we shall! Festival announcements and other shows to be announced at a future date. Roll on springtime!

Listening post... Rites Of Spring. Plosivs. The Gun Club. Rocket From The Crypt. All Pigs Must Die. Pere Ubu. Wovenhand. The Clash. Wye Oak. Buffy Sainte-Marie.

BEST LAID PLANS!

The October mini-tour was just what the doctor ordered! Thanks to all the bands, fans, promoters and helpers who made it such a blast. We'll be out on the road again in April 2022, with a bunch of festival appearances to follow, starting with Manchester Punk Festival, 15-17th April. We may even get around to completing and releasing the four songs that didn't appear on 'Dark Hands, Thunderbolts'... but don't hold us to it!

Listening post... Kurt Vile. The War On Drugs. Judee Sill. Sonic Youth. Joe Tilston. A.A. Williams. Plosivs. Myrkur. Eamon McGrath. Idles. Marissa Nadler. Simon & Garfunkel.

IT'S ALIVE!

We're back on the road! At long last! To kick things off, we're playing a (very belated) hometown album launch show on Saturday 25th September at the Junction, Plymouth. Joining us for the ride, we have Exeter's ace power-pop trio Okay, Bye; Plymouth's perennial cabaret-core pioneers The Bus Station Loonies; and moody pan-Devon post-punkers Heavy Heavy Hands. Tickets available here. Can't wait!

Then we head out in October for these six shows:

5th Exchange Basement, Bristol w/Erica FreasOkay, Bye

6th Waterfront, Norwich supporting The Skints

7th MK11, Milton Keynes supporting The Skints

8th The Exchange, Keighley w/Sounds Of Swami + Homonym

9th Labour Club, Lincoln w/The Capital + Other Half

10th New Cross Inn, London w/AIHN + WACO + more

We've started rehearsing and it's sounding pretty immense! Here's to the post-Covid future. See you out there!

Listening post... All Pigs Must Die. Converge. Wolfbrigade. Aimee Mann. Tubeway Army. Father John Misty. Colter Wall. Helpless. Amyl & The Sniffers. The Beatles. Baptists.

VINYL DIVINE!

THE NEW ALBUM VINYL IS WITH US AT LAST! It's available in black or white with embossed cover and download code. You can order it through Xtra Mile Recordings, on our Bandcamp, or directly from us via our BigCartel site. The white copies are shooting off the shelves, so get in there quick!

We're also in the process of booking a run of UK shows for October. We've lined up Bristol, Manchester, Keighley, Lincoln and London (and Plymouth in September). Hopefully a couple of summer festivals too. Watch this space!

Listening post... Mogwai. Control Top. Arab Strap. Leatherface. Fleetwood Mac. Nick Cave. Fleet Foxes. Hard Wax. The Clash. Harker. The Both.

THE NEW ALBUM IS OUT!

Releasing an album during a pandemic has probably been one of our dumbest ideas but, against all odds, here it is! We started recording 'Dark Hands, Thunderbolts' in Dec 2016 and finished it in Aug 2020. Over those four years, we were only in Middle Farm Studios for a total of 21 days! Babies, poverty, lethargy, life and Covid got in the way. Anyway, here's to the future, whatever the hell that may be. Love to you all!

Available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music and on our BandcampAlbum format options to buy HERE.

Note: the CDs are currently held up in Europe due to Brexit; and the vinyl won't be here 'til mid-March due to Covid. Blame the Tories and animal exploitation!

FEAR UP VIDEO!

Behold! The homemade video to our new single 'Fear Up'! It features virtually all of the Crazy Arm extended family and was filmed on location in Devon, Dorset, West Yorkshire and Swansea. Socially distant, mentally united!

And it's only one week 'til the album hits the virtual shelves! HOLY MOLY! Pre-order HERE.

Listening post... The Carter Family.  Constantines. Planes Mistaken For Stars. Cursive. Lana Del Rey.

FEAR UP AND AWAY!

Our new single is out today! 'Fear Up' is the third and final song to be taken from our new album before its release on 29th January. You can listen/download on all the usual streaming/digital formats HERE and on our Bandcamp.

Listening post... Nathaniel Rateliff. Spindrift. The Dolly Rocker Movement. Mogwai.

HAPPY NEW FEAR!

Meet the new year, same as the old year, as The Who nearly sang. We don't need to remind you that the devil's trident of Brexit, Covid and Austerity will doom us all to another year of physical and mental anguish, so we won't. Instead, we'll share the news that we'll be releasing 'Fear Up', the third song from our imminent new album, in two weeks (15th Jan)! It's one of our absolute favourites and features the genius that is Simon Dobson on trumpet, and the amazing Tia Kalmaru on harmony vocals. We like to think it sounds like Ennio Morricone conducting the Constantines. Dream big. The album is out two weeks later, on 29th Jan. Giddy? Yup!

Listening post... Fucked Up. Tragedy. Alan Lomax. Dead Kennedys. Elder. The Messthetics. Fairport Convention. The Kunts.

GIBBON APPETITE!

The second song from our imminent new album is out today! 'The Golden Hind' is a skewered ode to our hidebound, Brexit-majority hometown, with a musical nod to Fucked Up and 16 Horsepower.  You can listen/download on all the usual digital sites HERE or on our Bandcamp. And happy World Monkey Day!

Listening post... Fairport Convention. Off With Their Heads. X. Leonard Cohen. The Both. Chumbawamba. Modest Mouse.

BUDDY JOLLY!

Behold! Our little lockdown home movie for the new single, 'Brave Starts Here' (click on the title) filmed on a GoPro and an iPhone. It stars Jon's pet pup, Buddy, and a bunch of his two-legged friends, including everyone who played on the song. Think Cloverfield meets Marley & Me. (Big thanks to Louder Than War for the premiere.) Enjoy!

NEW YEAR'S REVELATION!

Hold the front page! Our brand new album, 'Dark Hands, Thunderbolts', will be released, at last, on 29th Jan 2021 through Xtra Mile Recordings! To say we're relieved and excited is a major understatement. It's been four years in the making (but only three weeks of actual studio time), seven years since 'The Southern Wild', and eight months since the online sneak preview, but it's really happening! All those broken promises of ours can now be conveniently forgotten about. It'll be available on vinyl (black or white), CD, digital and all streaming sites. Pre-order the album HERE.

You can stream 'Brave Starts Here', the first single from the album, right now via Spotify, Apple Music etc and on our Bandcamp. Or follow the link to buy it HERE.

Listening post... King Crimson. Descendents. Idles. Planes Mistaken For Stars. The Clash. Steve Miller Band. Buffalo Springfield. The Mamas & The Papas. Flux Of Pink Indians.

LOCKDOWN ROUND-UP 2!

Here we go again. Stuck in the city and out of our minds. But we have some chipper news. The album is ready, it will definitely be out on Xtra Mile Recordings (vinyl/CD/digital), the release date is set, and we're working on a homegrown  video for the lead song. Watch this space for announcements!

Live shows update:

*Alas, our local venue The Junction has temporarily closed, so our Get Rad Fest show on 5th December is off. I'm sure it'll be rescheduled.

*We're down to play an acoustic set at our beloved 2000 Trees festival, 8-10th July 2021. Details to come.

*It's a long way off but we're confirmed to play Till The Fest in London, 8-10th October 2021 with Bob Vylan, Waco, Charmpit and many more. If everything is back to normal by then, we'll build a UK tour around it. Hope springs eternal!

LOCKDOWN ROUND-UP!

Some news snippets... We had our first (acoustic) band practise since lockdown! We're booked to play Get Rad Festival, Plymouth on 5th December! We're recording a song for a Fugazi covers benefit record! We're back in Middle Farm Studios soon to complete our new album! We're in talks with Xtra Mile Recordings about releasing it! Other than that, we're just waiting out this situation until near-normal service is resumed.

In separate news, Jon and I have started a little lockdown side-band. No name yet but we have a handful of songs under construction which we'll put up on Bandcamp when they're ready. Watch this space!

RIP Ennio Morricone 1928-2020

Listening post... The Night Marchers. Patti Smith. Lana Del Rey. Low. Ultravox. Dead Boys. Bry Webb. Attack In Black. Protomartyr. The Drips. Western Addiction. Circle Jerks. Descendents. Hey Mercedes.

STREAM A-GO-GO!

Covid shmovid! Here it is! Celebrating 15 years of Crazy Arm, a sneak preview of our brand new, unreleased, fourth album, 'Dark Hands, Thunderbolts'. All critical opinions welcome! Spare no feelings! It'll be streaming here and on our Bandcamp for 24 hours only from now (midday GMT). No sales or downloads! That's because the album isn't quite finished yet. We intend to record some extra bits, and possibly add an extra song. But we think it still sounds pretty damn epic (courtesy of Peter Miles at Middle Farm Studios, Devon). So, enjoy some new music on this fine bank holiday. And a huge thank you to everyone for 15 years of support. It means nothing without you. Victory is ours!

Listening post... Lana Del Rey. Johnny Flynn. X. Anna & Elizabeth.

AND WE'RE OFF!

Holy shitsnacks!

Welcome to the first ever official Crazy Arm website! It's only taken us 15 years! Why we waited so long is anyone's guess but I should think it has a lot to do with an over-reliance on social media and an ever-growing glut of streaming sites. And, of course, we like to take our time. Needless to say, this site is a DIY work-in-progress so bear with me while I learn the digi-ropes. Any issues or suggestions, please don't hesitate to grumble.

HOBOCORE FOR LYF!

And what better time to kick this website off than on our 15 year anniversary? Yup, our debut show was on 25th May 2005 at the White Rabbit, Plymouth, as a fresh-faced trio (Jon Dailey, Simon Marsh and me), supporting local legends, NoComply. So, 15. We're now a stroppy, directionless teenager with an identity crisis and bad skin. Sounds about right.

To commemorate the occasion, we're going to stream our brand new, unreleased, fourth album, 'Dark Hands, Thunderbolts', FOR ONE DAY ONLY! See it as a sneak preview, a little fleeting gift from us to you in these trying times. And also to prove that we haven't been fibbing for the past three years. Rest assured, it will definitely get a proper release when we're through the worst of this unprecedented pandemic, and when we can realistically tour it. Watch this space!

SOUTHERN COMFORT!

We still have 17 vinyl copies of our acoustic album, 'The Southern Wild', left. It comes in a DIY A3 fold-over sleeve instead of the proper cover - we had a bunch of leftover vinyl without the official sleeves! It's available to buy for a tenner on our BigCartel site (alongside our Clash tribute/rip-off t-shirts and more). Album downloads, lyrics and liner notes available by email on request.

Listening post... Wipers. X. The War On Drugs. Planes Mistaken For Stars. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Hot Snakes. The Both. Tommy & The Commies. Bry Webb. The Gun Club. Daft Punk. Fontaines DC. Fugazi. Rhiannon Giddens. The Clash. Murder By Death. Band Of Horses. Brandi Carlile.
